Transactions & Happiness

I am currently reading a Stephen Hawking book and it’s mind blowing (mainly because I don’t understand most of it lol). But…the biggest takeaway is our universe and world is all engineered around mathematics. Everything has an equation / a law. 1+1 must equal 2.

Everything we do in life is generally for a something back - let’s call it an equation.

If I do X, then I’ll get Y. Great…Until you don’t get Y.

The law changes when it comes to our nearest and dearest. We do things for our loved ones unconditionally. We (hopefully) don’t do it as a transaction. The support we give our closest brings us great happiness knowing we are supporting someone we care deeply about. The transaction is action for happiness.

Right, let’s think about the gym (suppose I need to get to the point).

“If I diet for 8 weeks (X) I will get insane abs (Y)”. Transaction.

But…what happens if after dieting for 8 weeks you don’t get quite the outcome of your transaction. Maybe you only have 2 abs showing, not 6. What happens then? Most likely drop off / feelings of disappointment and so on.

I believe we must stop viewing the gym (or your efforts) as a transaction. I think we should position our actions as one of love / care. Treat the gym (and your body) and as a loved one. Don’t train for a transaction. Train for the happiness it brings you.

Training brings happiness because you are caring about you. You are loving yourself.

Keep the transactions for credit cards. Let care & love be your focus in your relationship with the gym.

Take care,

Jack
